Lunch at the Pig ...

I was lucky enough to visit the Pig in Brockenhurst for lunch with my friend Rebecca this week.

The Pig in the forest is a beautiful country house hotel and restaurant in the New Forest, the first in the chain of the Pig hotels, owned by the Lime Wood Group, this place is truly beautiful.

The crisp sunny weather was ideal for a drive down the Beaulieu road into the forest. On arrival you drive up a tree lined path to the breathtaking country house, guarded by two rather handsome stone dogs, an ancient oak tree facing the house, the front door invitingly ajar, we were met with warmth and shown to our table, past the large burning log fire.

The dining room is light, spacious but cosy, rustically charming, a large conservatory area strewn with herb trays, watering cans, climbing greenery, industrial lamps and amazing views over the lawns. The tiled floor is a colourful, pretty, impressive arts and crafts arrangement (very instagrammable!).

The menu offers seasonal dishes sourced from local ingredients. I decided in the mackerel on sourdough to start, the south coast silver mullet with crushed potatoes and hollandaise for main, couldn't fault either, so tasty and fresh, and being that we were at the Pig, I thought it would be fitting to go the whole hog and have a dessert too! The poached pear and ice cream was delicious.

After dinner we had a nosy round the bar and sitting areas, the decor is cosy English country house, oak wooden floors, portraits hanging on the walls, log baskets and books - hygge personified.

We then wandered around the grounds over to the impressive and immaculately attended veg gardens, most veg and herbs on the menu are sourced from their own gardens. My highlight was popping down to say hello to the very cute Kunekune pigs.

The Pig really is a fantastic place to visit for a relaxed lunch, cosy dinner or weekend stay, a real gem in the New Forest, I feel so lucky to be just a short drive away. I already can't wait to return.
