Having two giant, juicy cooking apples left over from an apple and blackberry cake, I decided to rustle up this apple crumble while babysitting my nieces and nephews last weekend, very basic, super simple, suits faddy children and adults alike!

Ingredients -

(Serves 5)

2 large cooking apples

4oz Butter

4oz Sugar + 2 tbls for the apples

4oz Plain flour

Cinnamon - add as much as you like depending on your taste - I used ALOT!

Preheat fan oven to 180 degrees.

To make the crumble, rub together the butter, sugar and flour until you have a breadcrumb like consistency. Add a tsp of cinnamon.

Peel and cut up the apples and place in the bottom of an oven proof dish. Sprinkle over two large tablespoons of brown sugar and a teaspoon of cinnamon.

Spoon the crumble mixture over the apples.

Place on the middle shelf and cook for 35-40 minutes until golden brown.

Serve with a generous dollop of custard or cream.

I love the simplicity of the tart apples and the warming cinnamon in this recipe, for me this kind of dessert is the the epitome of cosy autumn evenings, but you could easily pimp up this recipe by adding different fruit such as blackberries, using pears instead of apples, adding your favourite nuts to the crumble, a pinch of nutmeg etc.
